Following on from our last article on AWS’ S3 storage, we decided to add some price comparisons between the largest S3 providers. Looking at the platforms our Resellers use, we are focusing on Wasabi, Azure, AWS, and Backblaze.
We haven’t seen any significant differences between the UK instances of Wasabi, Azure (blobs) and AWS’ S3.
**** There may be additional costs associated with data transfer (egress), requests, and retrieval for certain storage classes. It is important to consider these costs when choosing cloud storage.
All versions of the BOBcloud backup software allow you to use any S3 compatible storage destination for your backups. You can have more than one backup destination on any of the thousands of cloud storage providers or your own local storage wherever it is located.
What about speed?
We haven’t seen any performance issues between Wasabi, Azure, AWS, and Backblaze. We are basing our results on connectivity within the UK where the main three have data centres. Backblaze opened their first data centre in Amsterdam in 2019, and the connectivity speeds between the UK and Amsterdam are comparable to those within the UK.
In terms of technical capabilities, all four storage providers offer reliable, scalable, and durable storage options for businesses of all sizes. Backblaze B2 and Wasabi S3 offer affordable pricing with simple pricing models, making them great options for smaller businesses and startups. Azure Blobs and AWS S3 offer more complex pricing models but offer a wider range of storage classes and integrations with their respective cloud platforms.
**The prices listed are based on standard pricing for the London region as of 24th April 2023 and may be subject to change based on usage, region, and other service options. Backblaze’s price is shown from their region outside the UK.
The choice of storage provider depends on your specific needs and budget. It’s recommended to evaluate each provider’s pricing model, storage classes, features, and integrations to find the best fit for your business.
Conclusion Wasabi remains the lowest-priced provider for S3 object storage. They also provide egress free of charge for normal usage (heavy users will see some costs). As yet, they don’t charge for IO transactions.
